why work with a mentor?

We’ve all been there...that is those of us who have survived those early years of teaching. We remember all too well the lack of confidence, the feeling of overwhelm and the weekends spent preparing work or second guessing our abilities.

And the truth is, even with many years of teaching under our belt, we can fall back on those feelings! The difference is, time and experience give us the tools, skills and confidence to keep things on track.

Support in your work environment is important! However, the reality is, more experienced colleagues are often busy with their own work demands, which makes it hard for you to ask for help when they are often on the run. They simply do not have time to provide additional and ongoing mentoring support.

As a new teacher, you can often feel the pressure of appearing confident, professional and on top of your workload. You might even be fighting off the story of 'imposter syndrome', and this stops you from reaching out for help, especially in challenging situations.

Working with an external mentor can provide access at a time when YOU need support. You can ask questions , solve problems and speak freely about your concerns in a trusted, safe environment, away from your everyday work, without the fear of judgement or failure.

meet your mentor

"After meeting Susie, I was quickly able to see what I believe to be Susie’s gift; the ability to facilitate and nurture connection. She does this with individuals and groups from all walks of life. I have seen Susie’s knack for creating connections to transform individuals, and building relationships and teams."

susie edmonds

teacher and mentor

Hi, I’m Susie Edmonds; teacher, life coach, mentor and founder of The New Teacher Project.

While I now have years of experience in the teaching profession, I remember my first years of teaching as if it was yesterday! Looking back, I often wonder how I managed to find my way through the sea of self-doubt, judgement and never-ending workload. As much as I loved my job, I often felt overwhelmed, unsure and worried about getting things wrong.

My passion for helping new teachers has been born from reflecting on my experience, developing my skills and confidence and working with great colleagues...many of whom have been new teachers, bringing new ideas and new energy.

Having worked in a diverse range of educational settings for over 20 years, I am well aware of the pressures of balancing the demands of teaching, while trying to balance this with other aspects of life, for an overall sense of wellbeing.

Over the years, I have mentored teachers in their first years of teaching and worked with practicum students in their final year of placement. I have found that the best way to support beginning teachers is by providing practical strategies along with self-awareness and reflection skills.

Through individual mentoring, I will encourage you to tap into your own internal resources as well as help you to develop the skills needed to thrive in this profession. You will be challenged, supported and empowered to build awareness, gain clarity and maximise your full potential.

I want you to start your teaching career feeling supported and empowered, so you too can feel happy and confident in your new career.

Are you ready to take on the world of teaching and bring your best self...whatever that is and whatever it will become? Let’s do this!

how does mentoring work?

What is a mentoring session?

Mentoring sessions are personalised sessions where the focus is on YOU! I will work with you in areas where you most struggle or want to develop. I will provide professional guidance, as well as encourage you to question, listen and self-reflect in order to find what works best for you and build your confidence, skills and knowledge.

What do we focus on in a session?

You may be working on a particular goal or trying to gain some clarity and direction about a particular challenge.

What if I am unsure what I want to work on?

If you are unsure exactly what you would like to cover, I know how to ask open-ended questions to help you uncover your blocks and guide you towards solutions.

What is the role of the mentor?

This is your time and I am here to listen to you and be of service to you in whatever way I can. I will offer guidance, encouragement and support as well as help you to develop a personal understanding, resilience and confidence.

Bella B

- New Scheme Teacher

"Before I met Susie, I was completely overwhelmed with teaching from time-management and paperwork, to behavioral management and looking after my own wellbeing.

Susie helped me to become the confident, positive teacher I am today. She showed me the importance of looking after yourself before helping others, how to engage a difficult audience of teenagers, the need to celebrate little wins, reflect on the failures and silence my inner critic.

The struggle and anxiety I had in the classroom, has transformed into a safe and supportive environment. For that, I will be forever grateful."

Emma L

- New Scheme Teacher

"Before working with Susie I was struggling to find the level of support needed as a beginning teacher. I was trying to deal with issues such as effective behavioral management, contacting and conversing with parents, navigating staffroom dynamics, all while trying to look competent and prioritse my mental health. Not sure if I was doing the right thing, I found myself lacking the self-confidence to back myself and my abilities in the classroom.

Susie worked with me to build and refine my skills through self-reflection and practical applications. Susie's mentorship demystified the knowledge and wisdom of experienced teachers, which has, and will continue to follow me to new schools and new challenges".

Ally V

- Uni Student

"Hey Susie! I feel like I have incorporated the things we talked about into my life beyond what you would expect! The positive shift in my perspective in these past couple of weeks surpassed all my expectations. It's incredible."

Danielle S

- Uni Student

"Susie is more than just a teacher. She is an adept leader on the art of life; her lessons are about being vulnerable and becoming the best you can be. Something that perhaps a classroom or textbook could never do."
